YOU HAVE YOUR NEW CANDLE, NOW WHAT?
THERE ARE SOME THINGS TO KNOW NOW THAT YOU HAVE YOUR CANDLE!
- Prior to the first use, if your candle wick was not trimmed, cotton wicks should be trimmed to 1/4″ and wood wicks to 1/8″. We suggest using a wick trimmer, but scissors or even nail clippers will work.
- The surface you use to burn your candle is also important. You want to find a place that is not only resistant to heat, but away from pets, children, things that like fire, such as curtains, and candles public enemy #1: drafts.
- Candles, or more specifically wax, has a memory. Ideally you want to burn your candle the first time long enough to achieve a full melt pool to the side of the jar. If, for example, you have a jar with a 3-inch diameter: You burn for just one hour. The pool is only 1 inch from center. The next time you burn, it will go no further than the previous burn. This is what creates the tunneled “feature” of a candle. It’s a feature you can do without.
- Never burn a candle longer than 4 hours. It increases risks of fire danger, glass breakage and frankly, the jar gets really hot.
- The closer to the bottom of your jar, the hotter the flame burns. As such, the hotter the candle jar will get. Let it cool before touching it.
- Finally, when your candle reaches about 1/2″, it is time to stop using that one. Glass breakage is more likely if you were to continue trying to burn so close to the bottom.
